How many drills does a 30 × 40 cm painting need?
A full drill painting with a 30 × 40 cm printed area needs about 19,200 square or 15,194 round drills. A 40 × 50 cm painting needs around 32,000 square or 25,276 round drills. All other sizes are in the table above.
How the drill calculator works
Square drills are usually 2.5 × 2.5 mm. That means four drills per centimeter and 16 per square centimeter. Round drills usually have a 2.8 mm diameter and sit in a slightly larger grid – about 12 to 13 drills per square centimeter.
Important: only the printed area counts
Most canvases have an unprinted border of 2 to 5 cm. Measure only the area with symbols. A 40 × 50 cm canvas often has a printed area of about 36 × 46 cm.
Why plan a reserve?
A few drills always get lost, drop on the floor or are faulty. That is why most kits include 10 to 20% more drills than needed. If you buy drills yourself, plan at least 10% extra.
Partial or full drill?
With a full drill painting the whole area is covered. With a partial drill only the motif gets drills and the background stays free – so you need fewer drills. Estimate the covered share and set it in the calculator.
