What do DMC numbers mean in diamond painting?

DMC is a French embroidery floss manufacturer founded in 1746 in Mulhouse. Its color numbers have become the standard – not only for cross stitch but also for diamond painting. Almost every canvas comes with a legend that assigns a DMC number to each symbol, so you know exactly which drill color goes where.

What do I need the color chart for?

Reordering missing drills: the number lets you find exactly the right color in any shop.
Sorting leftover drills: label your spare drills by DMC number and keep them for future paintings.

Do diamond painting drills match DMC floss exactly?

Drills are matched to DMC numbers, but every manufacturer produces its own drills. Slight differences between brands and batches are normal, so it is worth reordering from the same supplier.

How many DMC colors are there?

This chart contains 454 colors, including White, Ecru and B5200 (Snow White). Many diamond painting shops stock around 447 colors as drills; a few special colors are not available everywhere.
