What is the cause? The quick check
| What you notice | Likely cause | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| New canvas, just unpacked, barely sticky | Cold from shipping – or weak adhesive from the start | Warm it, otherwise contact the seller |
| Everything sticks less in winter | Cold room, cold table | Warm it |
| Drills will not hold in some spots, you can see lint | Dust, hair, crumbs in the adhesive | Tweezers |
| The area feels smooth and dry | Film left open too long, adhesive dried out | Craft glue or tape |
| Drills stick at first, fall off later | Not pressed down firmly or placed too tightly | Press down |
| Only the edge is not sticky anymore | Edge was left open, hands and sleeves took the adhesive off | Craft glue, tape the edge |
6 steps to make it sticky again
- Warm it. Leave a cold canvas at room temperature for a few hours, ideally flat and with the film on. Cold adhesive is much less sticky – often that alone solves the problem.
- Check it. Tap the adhesive lightly with a clean, dry finger. If it is still a little tacky, pressing harder is usually enough. If the spot feels smooth or dry, it needs help.
- Remove lint. Pull out hair, dust and crumbs with tweezers. They sit between adhesive and drill and stop it from holding. Pet hair is the most common reason.
- Refresh small spots. Apply a very thin layer of clear craft glue or an acid-free glue stick, let it get tacky, then place the drills. Use very little – too much squeezes out between the drills. Always test at the edge first.
- Bridge larger areas. If a whole area is dry, cut thin double-sided tape to size and lay it on. Take a photo of the symbols first so you know what was underneath. If you use spray adhesive, spray very lightly, cover the rest and air the room well.
- Press and cover. Cover finished areas with baking paper and press them down firmly with a roller, a rolling pin or a heavy book. Always cover open areas during breaks.
What to avoid
Iron or hair dryer: Heat can make the adhesive runny, smear it or dry it out for good. The canvas can warp.
Water, wet wipes, alcohol: They dissolve the adhesive or make the canvas wavy.
Thick layers of glue: Too much glue dries into visible edges and makes drills sit crooked.
How to keep the adhesive fresh
- Only open as much film as you can finish in one session.
- Use baking paper instead of the film – it does not stick and protects just as well.
- Work with clean, dry hands; hand cream only afterwards.
- Tape the edges with washi tape or painter's tape right at the start.
- Store unfinished paintings flat, cool and out of direct sunlight, and never roll them drills inward. More under rolling and storing a painting.
When should you contact the seller?
If a new canvas is still barely sticky after a few hours at room temperature, the adhesive was weak from the start. Write to the seller right away – before you begin – and send photos. Many sellers replace it or send a new one. Small shops with good advice are listed under Recommended Shops.

Frequently asked questions
What do I do if my diamond painting is not sticky anymore?
Bring the canvas to room temperature, remove dust and hair with tweezers and refresh weak spots with a very thin layer of clear craft glue or an acid-free glue stick. For larger areas, cut thin double-sided tape to size. If a new canvas does not stick at all, contact the seller.
Can you make the canvas sticky again?
You cannot renew the original adhesive, but you can help it: if it is just cold, room temperature is enough. If it is dirty, remove the lint. If it has dried out, use a thin layer of craft glue, a glue stick or double-sided tape.
Can I use a hair dryer or an iron on the canvas?
Better not. Heat can make the adhesive runny, smear it or dry it out for good, and the canvas can warp. Room temperature is the safe way.
Does water or a damp cloth help?
No. Water and wet wipes dissolve the adhesive or make the canvas wavy. Remove dust dry, with tweezers or a soft brush.
Why is a new canvas not sticky?
Often it is just cold from shipping. If it is still barely sticky after a few hours at room temperature, the adhesive was weak from the start. Contact the seller with photos before you begin.
How do I stop the adhesive from drying out?
Only open a small part of the film at a time, cover open areas with baking paper during breaks, work with clean hands and store the canvas flat, cool and out of direct sunlight.
